Irina Sherbakova

Irina Sherbakova, born in Moscow in 1949, is a Germanist and historian. She translated German literature into Russian and was an editor of literary magazines. Since the 1970s, she has devoted herself to investigating the terrors of the Stalin era and co-founded the NGO “Memorial”, which was banned in Russia in 2021. She received, among others, the German Federal Cross of Merit, the Carl von Ossietzky Prize and the Goethe Medal.
