César Rendueles


César Rendueles, born 1975 in Girona, Spain, teaches sociology at Complutense University in Madrid. He has edited and translated the works of Karl Marx and Walter Benjamin. In 2022, his book “Gegen Chancengleichheit” (“Against Equal Opportunities”, Spanish original: “Contra la igualdad de oportunidades”) was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in Berlin. Rendueles lives in Madrid.

I think that ‘equal opportunities’ are a trap

Giving people equal opportunities sounds like a great idea. After all, who could possibly object to that? Being critical of such an idea is a little like defending performance enhancing drugs in cycling races, or feudal privileges. But there is a trap in the idea of equal opportunities - and that is the reduction in our ideal of egalitarianism.
