Poorest nation, richest nation (Issue III+IV/2018)


Up until recently environmental protection and nature did not play much of a role in Chinese ideas about economic growth. But now, there are plans to plant 666 million hectares of woodland by 2020 – that is, an area as big as all of Ireland. And the Chinese are aiming high: They want to have 43 percent of the whole country covered in forests by 2050. At the moment, it is only 22 percent.
